The monastery was founded in 1253 as a nunnery of the Cistercian Order and Saint Gertrude of Nivelles was elected patron saint.
The monastery was as such until 1810 in function. In 1811, buildings and land belonging to the monastery were sold and came into the possession of the Amtmann Heyne from Gröningen.
In 1945, the descendants of the private owners of the monastery - the Schrader and Heyne families - were expropriated as part of the land reform, the arable land was transferred to small and new farmers and the buildings of the monastery became the property of the community Hedersleben.
In the post-war period, a collection center / accommodation for war refugees was set up in the main building of the monastery. From the mid-50s to 1977, a "Central School" was established in the main building of the monastery for the children of the community Hedersleben and surrounding communities. In the area of the farmyard, the Agricultural Production Cooperative (LPG) used the buildings for different purposes. After the German reunification the community Hedersleben, as owner, was responsible for the preservation and use of the monastery.
