The church of St. Jacobi is the second of the three large churches in the Hanseatic city of Stendal. It is the "pilgrim church" of Stendal. Events are held regularly in the church and it is an open church (note the opening times).

St. James' Church is the second of Stendal's three major churches. It dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Its tower was built between 1893 and 1901 and stands in place of the original tower, which collapsed in 1808. A sandstone plaque is set into its south side, with an inscription promising an indulgence to those who participate in its construction: "At Easter 1311, the master builder Deneke rebuilt me. Lord, grant those who build me the joys of eternal life. Whoever seeks an indulgence here will find it; for the Holy See has granted 1,210 days so that this construction will be truly permanent."
This church also contains a large number of interesting gravestones and epitaphs. The predecessor of St. James' Church was a Romanesque fieldstone building, presumably the village church of Stendal.

The parish of St. Jacobi was founded in the 12th century. The Jacobi church was then built at the beginning of the 14th century. The patron saint of the church, Saint James the Greater, stands in front of the pulpit. He is a striking figure, equipped as a pilgrim with hat and walking stick.
