The castle, made of red sandstone, is one of the most important and beautiful Renaissance buildings in Germany. In the 13th century, a medieval fortress was built on the site of the castle, from which the Archbishops of Mainz temporarily administered their territory. During the Margraviate War, the castle was set on fire in 1552, but was restored around 20 years later. Between 1614 and 1618, the castle was built in the Renaissance style by the Strasbourg master builder Georg Ridinger. During the Second World War, the castle was badly damaged and only reopened in 1964. The castle church with its Renaissance altar, pulpit and portal sculptures by Hans Juncker, the princely living quarters, the world's largest collection of architectural models made of cork, the State Picture Gallery with works by Lucas Cranach the Elder are unique. and the Castle Museum of the city of Aschaffenburg with works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Christian Schad (from 2016 the world's largest collection of the artist's works can be seen in the "Christian Schad Museum").
