The Mosque of Bibi Khanum is one of the most important sights in Samarkand. In the 15th century it was one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in the Islamic world. Bibi Chan (Bibi-Khanym Mosque) is one of the largest and most awe-inspiring mosques in Central Asia. Commissioned by the legendary conqueror Timur (Tamerlane) after his Indian campaign in 1399, the mosque was built on the foundations of an older structure and dramatically expanded to reflect his imperial ambitions.

Named after his beloved wife Saray Mulk Khanum, the mosque features a colossal courtyard, towering minarets, and a breathtaking dome that rises 40 meters high. At its peak, it could host up to 10,000 worshippers. Despite centuries of decay and earthquakes, the mosque has been beautifully restored and remains a masterpiece of Timurid architecture.
