The current district court was already mentioned on a city map from 1853 as the "Royal District Court". The prison extension must also have been there before 1900, because the "Rügensche Kreis- und Anzeigenblatt" wrote on September 27, 1901: "As already announced, the local court and prison building is being rebuilt and enlarged. The construction work that has been started will be carried out in such a way that everything will be underway when the bad season arrives." Today the prison is no longer in operation. As part of the court structure reform, the former Bergen auf Rügen District Court has been a branch of the Stralsund District Court since November 23, 2015.
