Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768) is regarded as the founder of classical archeology and modern art studies. He is Stendal's most famous son. Coming from a humble background, he spent his childhood, school and youth and his earlier professional years in the Altmark: Stendal, Salzwedel, Osterburg, Seehausen and in Werben. Reason enough to follow in Winkelmann's footsteps in the Altmark
