The nature reserve Hilgener Ziegeleiloch is located southeast of Hilgen and west of Bechhausen in the town of Wermelskirchen. The nature reserve includes the disused brickworks pit on the south-eastern outskirts of Hilgen and the adjacent areas, some of which are wooded.

On November 4, 1898, the "Hilgener Dampfziegelei GmbH" started operations on the north-western edge of today's lake to process the local slate into a variety of brick and clinker products. The clay quarrying - with the help of the still preserved conveyor right at the factory - created a deep pit over time. With no natural inlet or outlet, the pit was filled with rainwater. Today it is both a protected habitat for animals and plants and a testament to the industrial history of the Bergisches Land.

The Ziegeleisee in Hilgen is a small nature reserve directly behind the old brickworks. It was created from the old clay pit (Ziegeleier Loch) of the Becker brickworks, which ceased operations in 1975.
