"La Gallia" (formerly Germania) is the name of a historic building in Strasbourg, built in 1885 on the banks of the Ill river in the Neustadt district. The building is one of those built by the German Empire after the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Its Germanic architectural style was used specifically in Strasbourg at the time and is reminiscent of the German Renaissance. Built in 1885, the place was named Germania after an insurance company of the same name based in Hamburg and in reference to the Latin name "Germania" which designated Germany in ancient times.
In 1918, when Alsace-Lorraine was annexed to France, the building was renamed Gallia, the Latin name for "Gaul". Today it houses what is probably the oldest secular university restaurant in France, as well as the regional center for university and school work (CROUS) of Strasbourg and the headquarters of the General Federation of Students of Strasbourg (AFGES). The Gallia Building features Northern European architectural elements with facades made of Vosges sandstone and Siegersdorf brick.
Built between 1883 and 1885 for the Germania insurance companies, the building was renamed Gallia in 1918.
The building houses the first secular university restaurant in France, managed by the General Federal Union of Strasbourg Students.
Following renovations from 2015 to 2017 at a cost of €14 million, the building offers modern student accommodations.
The central section originally featured a distinctive gable that was lost during World War II.
