Here the church was not allowed in or into the village.

Oberlauken's church stands on a hill that is visible from afar and is one of the oldest places of worship and court in the region due to its old linden trees - including an impressive specimen that is over 1000 years old. In 1580, a chapel was first documented here, which, according to an 18th century description, was probably Romanesque in its basic features, with a small hall with an arched opening to the choir facing east and a free-standing tower. The tower was demolished after being struck by lightning in 1737, and the dilapidated chapel was demolished in 1811, except for three foundation walls, which were reused for the new building, which was also plastered on the outside and whitewashed on the inside.

The cemetery surrounding the church and expanded in 1873 is lined with a wall and accessible from both the street and the village via a footpath.

In front of it on the western slope is a complex with a memorial standing on a green hill. Brick cube with a tin tent roof, with an Iron Cross on top. On the west side is a plaque with the names of the victims of both world wars.

According to legend, the people of Oberlauken initially wanted to build the church in the village itself. However, the lumber disappeared from the construction site at night and reappeared on the Lindenberg. After the villagers had brought the lumber back down, the magic was repeated the following night. On the third night, a mysterious figure appeared, pointing to the mountain with a linden branch. The village then decided to build the chapel on the mountain. kirche-merzhausen-lauken.de/herzlich-willkommen/kirche-oberlauken.

Next to the chapel stands a linden tree that has broken into three trunks, all of which have continued to grow as individual trees. There are a total of six linden trees around the chapel and together with it they form an ensemble. The linden trees are protected as a natural monument.
