Of the original two linden trees, only one remains, and even that is only a torso. According to tradition, the trees were planted during the Thirty Years' War by farmers who killed and buried two Swedish mercenaries here because they had stolen their cattle. To avoid anyone noticing that the site had recently been dug, they planted a linden tree on each grave.
