    "In 1858, the Irish mining entrepreneur William Thomas Mulvany consolidated several mining properties in the Castrop area and named the new mining area "Erin" in memory of his hometown.

    After the sinking of shafts 1 and 2 on Karlstrasse, in the immediate vicinity of the old town of Castrop-Rauxel, coal mining began there in 1867. In the following years, several firedamp explosions and water ingress occurred at Erin, which led to the mine's operations coming to a standstill in 1877.
