The Church of St. Mary Magdalene was originally built in the second half of the 14th century as a medieval Gothic church on a hill above the Spring River in the center of Karlovy Vary. At the beginning of the 18th century, it was in very poor condition after several fires, so it was decided to demolish the church and build a new one. This baroque cathedral of St. Mary Magdalene was built between 1733 and 1736 according to the plans of the well-known Czech architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer.
