When digging the excavation for the foundation of the new Kurhaus of Bad III in the early 1960s, a previously unknown spring emerged. The thermal water was captured in a spring bell and drained into the area between the new spa building and the St. Bernhard Hospital under the Bernhard rock.

As early as 1865, a pretty, octagonal, continuous wooden pillar pavilion richly decorated with carvings was built above the outlet of the newly discovered spring. Originally the spring was called Kurquelle (Lázeňský pramen), until 1918 it was named after Emperor Franz Joseph I and in 1946 it was named Svoboda (Freedom). Today the spring, located directly on the Karlovy Vary main promenade, is a frequent meeting place for visitors to Karlovy Vary while strolling through the spa center.
