Markgröningen wine is sold under the name "Sankt Johännser", which refers to the location where the wine is grown. The name goes back to a chapel that was first mentioned in documents in 1380 and was dedicated to John the Baptist. After the successful reintroduction of the Reformation in 1552, Duke Christoph considered chaplains and isolated field chapels to be superfluous and also ordered the local one to be demolished.
