The garden gate (formerly New Gate) in the former Free Imperial City of Reutlingen was first mentioned in a document in 1392. It is one of the seven city gates previously; Of these, apart from the garden gate, only the Tübingen gate is preserved. Although part of the city wall, the gate was closed to traffic until 1700; there wasn't even a bridge over the moat. Up until the Württemberg period (from 1803) the gate also served as a prison.
