The simple structure, which consisted of 5 steel supports and a roof, was built in 1878/79. The temple was built by the “Aschaffenburg Beautification Association” founded in 1874. In 1880, “His Majesty King Ludwig” gave permission for the temple to bear his name. The temple served as a memorial to the Bavarian King Ludwig I and testifies to his reverence for art and culture.

The Ludwig Temple stood on the Bischberg until 1936/37. In 1936/37 the Ludwig Temple was moved to the Fasanerie. The place on the Bischberg was needed for the defensive line that was built along the Maine. It was lost in the pheasantry as a result of the war.

In 1989, the head of the building construction authority, Ernst Holleber, made a model and plans of the temple based on the only available photo and was rebuilt on the summit of the Bischberg.

Today it is a very popular viewing point, with a view of the districts of Obernau, Nilkheim and Unser, the old town with Johannisburg Castle, the surrounding low mountain ranges of Odenwald, Spessart and Taunus, up the Main to Elsenfeld and down to the Frankfurt skyline.
