The building from the 15th century, only partially preserved in its original form, served in the Middle Ages and in modern times under the direction of a municipal department store master for the intermediate trade, which was monitored and taxed by the city. The city dance hall was located on the upper floor. The wool and fruit scales as well as the calibration equipment were on the ground floor. A special feature was the scales for the saffron grown on the Kleiner Kalmit near Arzheim. It was used as a gold color in the scriptorias as a mixture with turtle bile, later played a role as a fragrance and spice drug and as a remedy.
In the years 1838/79 the house was converted into a concert and theater building. After the festival hall was opened in 1907, the cinema moved here in 1909.
In 1995 a citizens' initiative got involved to turn Haus into a cultural center. The efforts were successful: together with the Frank-Loebschen-Haus and the Katharinenkapelle, the people of Landau now have a "cultural center of the old town".
