The old department store from the 15th century served in the Middle Ages and in modern times for the city the supervised and taxed intermediate trade. In the 19th century the building was converted into a concert and theater building, after which a cinema had been opened. In 1995, the house was converted into a cultural center. The upper floor housed the city's dance hall. The ground floor contained scales for wool and fruit, as well as calibration equipment. A unique feature was the scale for saffron cultivated on the Kleine Kalmit near Arzheim. Saffron, mixed with tortoise bile, was used as a gold pigment in scriptoria and later played a role as a fragrance, spice, and medicinal remedy.
