According to the Depot map of 1871, where the municipal park now extends, there was a landscape-style park outside the old city wall that was separated into an eastern and western part by the Demer. A long path across the Demer connected both parts. The eastern part was behind a U-shaped building on Brugstraat and is now the garden of a mansion. The western part had a ring road with a roundabout, a pond and a connection to Tongersestraat. Part of it became the current Demerpark, which developed further south, but lost its westernmost part due to land consolidation.
