Originally called the Marble Boat, it was built in 1755 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong.

The 36 meter long boat was carved out of huge rocks. There was a Chinese-style cabin on the boat, which was destroyed by the Anglo-French Allies in 1860. When rebuilt in 1893, the cabin was built in a Western style and named the "Clear and Peaceful Boat" in keeping with the saying, "Let the river be clear and the sea peaceful."
