Above Traben-Trarbach on the Starkenburger Höhe, there are two mighty old stones on the edge of a field, a black spindle-shaped slate and a white standing quartz stone. They have been guarding a Celtic burial site since time immemorial. They are called combat stones. Already in the early Romantic descriptions of the Moselle, the Starkenburg height took up space because of these stones as the scene of a dramatic event. The great black man was once said to have been defeated by the brilliant white in a sword fight, hence his lying position.

The lying Hinkelstein can be found on the east corner of the small wooded area, the standing stone with a stone information board is reached from the south, where a small clearing opens up.
