In 1912, Giessen citizen Robert Sommer had a memorial stone made of yellowish-gray sandstone, modeled on a Roman grave stele, erected on the rampart of a reconstructed section of the Limes.
The tall rectangular sandstone block rises on a quarry stone base and is covered with a triangular roof with a embossed gable field and a central flower. A carved Latin inscription is spread across its four sides: Limes Impe Rii Romani, Memo Riae Roma Norvm Barbarvs Anno Mdccccxii, Civis Gisensis, Robertvs Sommer Cvm Vxore.

The Barbarian Stone stands on the northernmost bulge of the Wetterau Limes, part of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, about 1.5 kilometers (as the crow flies) northwest of the Pohlheim district of Grüningen.

There are four Latin inscriptions carved into the stone, one on each side.

The name “Barbarian Stone” comes from the inscription on the south-facing side:

    MEMORIAE ROMANORVM BARBARVS ANNO MDCCCCXII

“In memory of the Romans, a barbarian in 1912.”

On the back, facing north, is the inscription:

    LIMES IMPERII ROMANI

    “Border of the Roman Empire.”
