The Erfurt Cathedral (formerly also known as Marienkirche or Propsteikirche Beatae Mariae Virginis) is the most important and oldest church in Erfurt. He is 81.26 m high and owns the Gloriosa the largest free-swinging medieval bell in the world. The cathedral served only a short time in the middle of the 8th century as a bishopric and was the entire Middle Ages until into the early 19th century seat of the collegiate St. Marien. Since 1994 he is again cathedral of the newly created diocese of Erfurt and seat of the cathedral chapter (Wikipedia).

A 70-step staircase leads from Domplatz to Domberg with its two former collegiate churches. The cathedral with its high Gothic choir, Romanesque tower area and late Gothic west hall is the successor to the sacred building commissioned by Rome in 724. It was the main church of the diocese of Erfurt, founded by Bishop Bonifatius in 742. Inside, the Gothic choir windows, the extensive choir stalls (14th century) and the Romanesque sculptures of a enthroned Madonna and a monumental candle holder are particularly worth seeing. In the middle tower is the world's largest medieval free-swinging bell, the "Gloriosa". (Source: erfurt-tourismus.de/sehens-wissenswertes/sehens worth/dom-st-marien)
