Around 1300, the first church was built, reminiscent of the sanctuary and the old sacristy and a Gothic window on the east side of the tower. At that time, the church with the surrounding cemetery formed a fortified complex that served as a refuge for the population in times of insecurity. 1609 - 1611, the tower was raised by the fourth post-Gothic floor. In 1651 the church was rebuilt after being destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. The church was extended in 1707. In the course of this reconstruction, the west facade with the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn was built. The design is by Leonhard Dientzenhofer.

For the 200th anniversary of the death of Ferdinand Tietz in 1977, the casts of the figures that the artist created for the cemetery wall were put back on the church wall. Tietz is buried near the church. The originals of his works of art are in Schloss Seehof. The Patrozinium Maria Himmelfahrt is depicted in the baroque stucco ceiling by Johann Jakob Vogel (1708). The present high altar was acquired in 1964 by the branch church Mühlendorf near Bamberg. The picture in the midfield shows the Assumption of Mary in the Nazarene style.

The patronage "Maria (or in other spelling: Mariä) Himmelfahrt" of this church in Memmelsdorf refers to one of the many commemorative days or feast days in honor of the Mother of God Maria. It goes back to the feast of their physical acceptance into heaven, which the Church celebrates annually on August 15th.

In many rural areas it is customary that on this day herbal bundles (called "Kruggweusch" in the Rhenish dialect) are collected by the population and blessed in the festival service.
