    historical church,
Inaugurated in 1561 as a wooden church
Replaced by a stone church in 1593
open daily, supposed to be the most beautiful church in Saxony

A small wooden church was consecrated here in 1561. The baptismal font, the crucifix next to the pulpit, and the small bell, a gift from the elector, still come from this. In 1593 the wooden church was replaced by a stone building. The church tower was built in the 18th century. The interior of the church was painted in 1681 at the behest of Carl Rudolf von Carlowitz, electoral Saxon chief forester and game master. The head forester had himself immortalized visually and literally on the pulpit. The paintings were intended as a "poor bible" - and gave Schellerhau the reputation of being one of the most beautiful village churches in Saxony. Today's church is equipped with an organ made by Schuster from Zittau. As a reminder of mining, there are two 55 cm miners' candlesticks on the altar. They are cast entirely from Altenberger tin. In 2010 the belfry of the church was renovated and the bells were put back into operation. The church is usually open during the day. It was closed during my hike, and the access paths were totally snowed up.

Schellerhau offers a beautiful circular walk, but also trails in winter, which are not as crowded here as in Zinnwald.
