Today various companies are housed in the building. The former freight yard area has been converted into a modern residential area.

The northern freight station in Freiburg was built between 1901 and 1905 to separate freight traffic from passenger traffic at the main station. From 1903 to 1905, the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways built the locomotive hall as a railway maintenance wagon depot (BWW). Until 1983, the locomotive hall was mainly used to maintain, repair and maintain freight wagons. For years, the famous Orient Express was also brought back into shape in the locomotive hall. Then the railway moved out of the building.
