The digging of the Schipdonk Canal (1846-1860) between Deinze and Zeebrugge was, together with the digging of the Leopold Canal, one of the first major infrastructure works in the young Belgium.

The flax industry around Kortrijk had caused the Leie to become heavily polluted. In order to prevent this polluted water from flowing through Ghent, a connection was dug between the Leie and the North Sea upstream of Ghent. This also gave more control over the water level of the Leie and prevented flooding in Ghent. The function as an additional waterway was also a handy bonus.
From Zomergem, the canal runs in the bed of the Lieve (a much older canal) to Damme.
