The fountain on the market depicts Samson defeating a lion. It was made by Casper Junghans the Elder of Rochlitz in 1685 from Falka sandstone. In 1931/32, the fountain was reworked from Lower Franconian shell limestone by Fritz Kröner, Rudolf Tympel, Otto Hager and Otto Oettel due to storm damage. A third version was created in 1979 by the artist Heinz Plath. He worked with Posta hard sandstone.

The Simson fountain was built on the market square in 1685 by Casper Junghans the Elder in Rochlitz from Falkaer sandstone. Due to major storm damage in 1931, the fountain made of Lower Franconian shell limestone was reworked. In 1979, the artist Heinz Plath created a third version made of Postaer hard sandstone. For several centuries, the well was used for drinking and service water at the same time. The character "Simson" is shown as a lion tamer and embodies the strength of the city of Gera.
