The plant rose on a mountain spur of the Hainberg that slopes down on three sides. It was built on the site of a young bronze castle wall. The Osterstein Castle is the former residence of the Reussen J.L. The Weidischer Reichsvogt Heinrich resided in the castle in 1234. Later the bailiffs of Gera, the later lords of the city, lived there. Formerly referred to as "house" or "castle on the mountain in the city of Gera", the name "Osterstein" was not recorded in a chronicle until 1581. On April 6, 1945, during a heavy bomb attack, the facility suffered severe damage. In the years 1946-1948 the dilapidated parts of the ruin were removed and in 1962 further parts were blown up. Today only a few outbuildings and the keep remain. In 1993, the garden hall with stucco work from 1721, which had been used as a coal store for decades, was opened and emergency safety work started.Source: gera.de

Osterstein Castle is the former city castle of Zwickau. First mentioned as Castrum Czwickaw, it was badly damaged in a city fire in 1403.
The demolition and rebuilding in the next few years was followed by conversion into a stately renaissance castle from 1587 to 1590. From 1775 to 1962 it was a prison.
