Hiking
Levadas are the artificial waterways built in Portugal, Madeira (Portugal), and the Cape Verde Islands to carry water from the rainier areas to the agricultural land. In Madeira, water is channeled from the north and center of the island to the south. Levadas usually have only a slight gradient. They circumvent valleys and mountains, run through tunnels, and cross natural waterways on aqueducts.
