The Shanghai Sports Club (体育大厦, or Tiyu Mansion) was built in 1928 and designed by Elliott Hazzard. It was built as the ‘Foreign YMCA Building’, not to be mistaken for the ‘YMCA Building’ on the east of People’s Square, and to provide accommodation and recreation for foreign men in Shanghai.
The building was occupied by the Japanese during the second world war and was taken over by the Shanghai government in 1950. In 1957 the Shanghai Sports Club was opened to train young athletes.
The second floor houses a small sports museum (which as of Jan 2024 appears to be closed for some renovation work).I can recommend this article for more history on the building:shine.cn/feature/art-culture/1809081770
