The Portuguese built the church in 1514 near the Amsterdam Fortress. It was a Catholic church and dedicated to St. Jacobus. At the beginning of the 17th century. it was taken over by the Dutch and at the end of the 18th century. converted into a Protestant church. The name was changed to Immanuel.
