The Pattimura Monument in Ambon was built in memory of the national hero Thomas Matulessy. He was known as Pattimura and came from the island of Saparua, south of Seram. In 1817 he fought with others against the Dutch colonial rulers; They captured the Durstede fortress and drove out the Dutch. Through treachery he was taken prisoner by the Dutch and was executed in Ambon. The monument stands at this location.
