Since the beginning of the 2nd millennium, the islands of Ternate and Tidore in the Moluccas were the only source of cloves in the world. Indian, Arab, Chinese and Javanese merchants traveled to these islands to trade in this precious fruit and sell it at exorbitant prices in Europe and the Orient. Cloves, along with nutmeg and mace, were used by the Banda Islands to flavor and preserve food, as a medicine and as an aphrodisiac.

The cloves are usually dried in the sun and spread out on clean mats. To ensure that the cloves develop an even brown color, they should be raked and turned regularly. The color of the buds changes from pale rust red to a darker brown as the clove dries. The drying process takes about four to five days.
In the 17th century Nutmeg was one of the rarest spices in the world. In addition to its taste, its medicinal properties were also highly valued. Nutmegs are the seeds of a plum-like fruit that grows on a large evergreen tree native to the Banda Islands. The nutmeg trade was the subject of the spice wars from the 16th to 18th centuries, in which the major European trading nations were involved.
