Wilhelm I, full name Wilhelm Friedrich Ludwig of Prussia (* March 22, 1797 in Berlin; † March 9, 1888 ibid), from the House of Hohenzollern was King of Prussia from 1861 until his death and since the founding of the German Empire in 1871 the first German Emperor.
After his ailing brother Friedrich Wilhelm IV took over power, Wilhelm changed in 1858 from the conservative grapeshot prince of the March Revolution to the liberal prince regent of the new era. On October 18, 1861 he was crowned King of Prussia in Königsberg Castle. From 1862 he left most of the affairs of state to his Prime Minister and later Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. After the wars of unification and the founding of the German Empire, Wilhelm was proclaimed German Emperor on January 18, 1871 at the Palace of Versailles. In the years that followed, he gained great popularity in the young nation-state. Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_I._(German_Reich)
