Best Hikes to Waldleiningen Castle

Tips

  • The castle was built between 1828 and 1873 in the style of British castles by the princes of Leiningen, who are still remotely related to the British royal family. It served as a hunting lodge in the middle of a game park. During the Second World War, the castle was used as a military hospital and later converted into a psychosomatic clinic, which is now run by the Princely House as a private company.

  • Prince Carl Emich zu Leiningen (1804-1856), half-brother of Queen Victoria of England, had the Waldleiningen hunting lodge laid out by his father demolished in 1828 and a new summer residence built in the neo-Gothic style, which is also known as the German Windsor. The client and his artistic advisor, Eckardt, had stayed in England for many years and took up many architectural suggestions from English castles.
