The somehow weird name reminds us that the curch once stood without, meaning outside, the city walls near Cripplegate. Now it's an alien building within the brutalism complex of the Barbican. The curch was destroyed like much of the area by bombs during the Blitz but was but it was restored using the plans of the reconstruction of 1545.

Ancient church, much reconstructed and rebuilt. Dates back to Saxon (or pre-Saxon) times, rebuilt by the Normans, rebuilt again in the 14th Century, burnt down in the 16th and again in the 19th, bombed during the Blitz of the early 1940s. Oliver Cromwell married here, John Milton was buried here, and it has connections with several other notable names.
