Long before the settlement of the Ore Mountains, important old trade routes led from the south to the north of Europe. This included the route from the Bohemian Basin over or through the Miriquidi (Dark Forest) to the old settlement area of Central Saxony. As early as 1174, some of these routes, which served as long-distance trade routes between Bohemia, Rochlitz, and further to Prague, were documented as the "Old Bohemian Route" or the "Old Salt Road." Significant archaeological relics of these old trade routes have survived to the present day in the form of shoring, fords, and fortifications that served to secure the trade routes.
