The history of the Marian column
The Marian Column was founded in 1717 by Anna Maria Grimb based on a vow made during the plague and was erected in 1718. Her grandson Jakob Weinhardt von Tierburg decreed in his will that the Marian column should be illuminated with the four lanterns every Saturday and on Marian holidays. This has happened every Saturday since 1749, even today. That's why the square used to be called “Saturday Square”.
