The moated castle Oberau is one of the oldest in Germany. The first building dates from 1276. Currently (2020) it is unfortunately without water because it is being renovated. An association takes care of it and organizes guided tours.

The moated castle at Oberau is one of the oldest surviving castles of this type in Germany. The origin of the castle goes back to a fortified medieval castle, which was first mentioned in 1276. Under the leadership of the von Miltitz family, between 1550 and 1594, some striking reconstructions were carried out on the manor house, so that an extensive redesign in the sense of a Renaissance castle was completed. Charles XII, King of Sweden, occupied the Oberau moated castle several times between 1706 and 1707 - during acts of war. Even after that, the moated castle has a moving history.
