The castle was probably built by the Lords of Staufeneck as a Hohenstaufen feudal castle. They were close relatives of the Rechbergers and, like them, were among the leading imperial ministerials. They come from the ducal-royal castle team of the Hohenstaufen. The first Herr von Staufeneck, Friedrich, mentioned in 1257, bore the same seal of arms as Friedrich von Staufen, a rising lion.
After the fall of the Staufer, the fief became property. It included rich possessions from the Filstal to Stuttgart. Eberhard I - canon of Constance - increased this property through church influence. Nevertheless, the sex must have been in constant financial difficulties, because after 1274 only sales are recorded, and there is even talk of a pressing need. The last documentary mention of a Mr. von Staufeneck is found in 1374.
