There had been a branch of the Augustinian hermits in Erfurt since 1266. Construction of the monastery began in 1277. The funds for the extensive construction work were raised in the past centuries through alms and the sale of indulgences. What is particularly notable about the preserved buildings are the church's stained glass windows, which were manufactured between 1310 and 1340, and the outside pulpit, which testifies to the fact that sermons were also held for large crowds at the time were held outdoors.

This is the place where the young Martin Luther took his vow on July 17, 1505. After getting caught in a severe thunderstorm near Stotternheim, he entered the Order of the Augustinian Hermits here. Luther lived here as a monk until 1511. In 1507 he was ordained a priest in the church. Today, as part of guided tours, the reconstructed "Luther Cell" can be visited, offering an insight into his austere monastic life.
