The Heinzemann tour leads through the Felda valley in northern Vogelsberg. The low mountain range in the center of Hesse is formed by an extinct volcano from the Late Tertiary. Its mighty basalt layers form the largest contiguous volcanic massif in Central Europe. The Vogelsberg is one of the wettest areas in Germany and therefore also one of the largest natural water reservoirs. The Natura Trail leads into the FFH area “Feldatal/Kahlofen and Ohmaue” and into the bird sanctuary “Vogelsberg”, which partially overlap. The bird sanctuary covers almost the entire Vogelsberg with a total area of 636 km². It is home to 38 breeding bird species that live permanently in the area and 80 guest bird species that populate the area in the summer or winter months or use it as a stopover on their annual migration.
