The old town of Braunau am Inn is home to many historical superlatives. Between the magnificent town houses, many things have been preserved that amaze attentive guests. Time for a trip on the "cultural tour" through Braunau.

The Gothic town square is impressive at first glance. However, the cultural tour draws attention to things that are not immediately obvious. For example, the fact that an original bell foundry from the 14th century can be admired in the local history museum. Or the man with the long beard who looks down on passers-by from the relief on the town parish church of St. Stephan. Legend has it that the town captain Hans Steininger had to put his beard in a leather bag when he went out on the street. The original beard of Steininger, who died in 1597, is kept in the museum in the Herzogsburg.

Time for a refreshment? Then quickly back to the town square. Because the "Nudelkuchl" guest garden is open seven days a week. Creative Italian food is cooked in the Café Graf von Matera.

A detour across the Inn to Bavaria is worthwhile. Braunau's Bavarian sister town Simbach draws its charm from its Art Nouveau architecture. Together, Braunau and Simbach are a symbol of cross-border cooperation in the region's 'Entdeckerviertel'. Back on Braunau's town square, it's time for coffee and cake, for example in Café Melange or Bio Café Zagler.

Strengthened for a climb? 192 steps lead up the tower of the parish church of St. Stephan. A tower tour takes you up the sixth highest church tower in Austria. From the gallery at a height of 32 meters, the view extends as far as Burghausen and sometimes as far as the Tennengebirge. Alternatively, excess energy can be worked off at the 20 stations in the Braunau motor skills park.
