As part of the Sculptoura Trail from Weil der Stadt to Renningen: Sculpture "The Greats", 2005/06, bronze, steel, lacquer, Guido Messer, information: guido-messer.de

The sculpture is one of many on the Böblingen district's "SCULPTOURA" sculpture trail (schoenbuch-heckengaeu.de/sculptoura/).

      Quoted here from the brochure:

"With subtle wit, Guido Messer places his artistic figures

in public space: uninvolved participants in and within our everyday lives. As contradictory as this may sound, it is nevertheless an exciting characteristic in the sculptor's sometimes ironic, sometimes sarcastic work: The mostly bronze protagonists – here supplemented with steel and lacquer – are so preoccupied with themselves that they take no notice of the viewer. And yet they hold up a mirror to us, because we ourselves walk through our world as if it were none of our business.

The adolescent pose alone makes us smile, believing that we appear quite different here.

"The Greats" seem sublime and far removed from all everyday life, yet their own shadows are as presumably and impressively hanging over them. Guido Messer makes fun less of his characters than of himself and the viewers, who feel free from the Constraints

and dependencies. His verism characterizes the work

and grants the artist a special position among figurative sculptors in southwest Germany, which

perhaps also stems from the fact that he himself was born in Buenos Aires – a rogue who, in this respect, thinks of South American machos when encountering Messer's figurines.
