The Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes is a border line between the Rhine and the Danube, which the Romans began to draw after the Battle of Varus in the Teutoburg Forest in the year 9 of our era, probably as a monitored economic border to non-Roman areas. At 550 km long, it is the largest archaeological monument in Europe and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hiking trail leads over 86 km from Holzhausen an der Haide in Rhineland-Palatinate to Ober-Mörlen in the Wetterau and opens up the former Roman border wall along the main Taunus ridge. The wall and ditch are clearly visible.

You have to imagine the path on the Taunus Heights without trees, because the aim was to detect approaching dangers early. Shipbuilding, the elaborate border system and the burning of wood in the thermal baths had already led to the decimation of forest cover throughout Europe.
