The Church of St. George was built in the 15th century on the site of the former fortress and rebuilt after a fire in 1621. After another fire in 1760, the current church was rebuilt between 1763 and 1767. The church tower was only built in 1885. (Source: Wikipedia)

Virtually nothing reliable is known about the life of Saint George, to whom the church in Bečov was dedicated, but veneration of him stretches back to early Christianity. A martyr identified with George is said to have lived in the third century.

The legend of Saint George as the dragon slayer, however, is quite well known and widespread; he is often depicted – in paintings or statues – as the conqueror of the monster, often as a knight on horseback.

The feast day of the highly popular Saint George – he is, among other things, the patron saint of the English kingdom – in the calendar of saints is April 23rd.
