Combination of gravel and forest path but mostly path. Very muddy and hard going at times - def MTB territory in winter. Obviously traffic free and very popular with off road bikers. The woods are lovely and there are many paths to use that are much easier (tame gravel) I use it to travel to Dorchester and cut out road. Combine it with path from Lower Bockhampton bridge to get to Dorchester and you have a largely off road route, with little traffic (this path is generally easier going than the one from Beacon Corner. Thomas Hardy's cottage is National Trust (NT). There is a cafe nearby, not run by the NT.
