The stone cross stands at the village pond of Schönlind. The back bears two large crossed axes, carved into a recessed border, which in turn protrude three-dimensionally. Many conjectures have been made about the origin of this symbolism. In the Middle Ages, the Hecker family had two crossed axes in their family coat of arms. However, it is not known if they ever owned the area around Schönlind. Two crossed axes can also be found as a coat of arms on the Gothic seals of three patrician families in Cheb. A reference from the Cheb Eger book is worth mentioning, which dates back to 1383: according to this, the meat man Hansen Pemstel brought his friend, the meat man Zwifil, from life to death.

According to legend, two butchers got so angry during a fight over a calf in a farmer's stable that one of the butchers killed the calf.
The farmer then threw the butchers out of the stable, where they continued to fight and consequently killed each other with their axes.
