I immediately liked the church very much, it has something special. The fresco decoration covers the entire interior of the church and is preserved as completely as here in only a few churches in Thessaloniki.

Near the eastern wall of Thessaloniki, the Byzantine church of Saint Nicholas Orphanos was one of the few that was not converted into a mosque. Built in the early 14th century, it preserves within its interior a marvelous painting dated around 1310-20. It is one of the most representative examples of the painting of the Palaiologian Renaissance. The creator is probably the same as the frescoes of Mount Chilandari on Mount Athos. The founder of the temple has been proposed by the researchers to have been Nikon Skouterios, Kapandritis Orphanos, as well as Serbian Milutin, who, due to his marriage to Princess Simonida, had close ties with Thessaloniki.
