Tips

  • A Karl Borromeo Church or a Karl Borromeo Chapel is a Roman Catholic church or chapel with the patronage of Charles Borromeo, who was canonized in 1619. The churches and chapels were built in the Baroque period and later eras and were particularly widespread in the Counter-Reformation regions. During the Reformation, the entire population of the Breuberg estate turned to the new faith. There were no longer any Catholics in the entire kingdom.
Only when the Catholic line of princes of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg came to government did the first beginnings of Catholic life appear. In 1636, after the death of Count Wolfgang Ernst von Löwenstein, who was a Protestant, his brother Count Johann Dietrich succeeded him as co-regent in the Breuberg condominium.
He converted to the Catholic faith in 1621 and thus became the founder of the Catholic line of the Princely House of Löwenstein.

  • The chapel on the Breuberg used to serve as a parish church for Catholics. However, it soon became far too small and situated at too high a height. Therefore, every effort was made to build a sufficiently large and dignified parish church down in Neustadt. This plan was finally realized under Pastor Helferich in 1849. Previous pastors had prepared the construction and saved funds. Count Ludwig V of Erbach-Schönberg also provided part of the building site. The construction was particularly supported by Prince Karl zu Löwenstein.Out of gratitude to the Princely House of Löwenstein, it was dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo, Prince Karl zu Löwenstein's patron saint.
